Award Recipients & Other Grants

 

 

2008

In August 2008, a grant of $23,000 was made to The Wesley Institute in Brisbane to conduct a 5 symposia series to the medical community and general public on the topic of asbestosis/mesothelioma. The aim of the symposia was to increase awareness of the disease, its clinical manifestations and the effect on patients and their families.

2007

 

In November 2007, a grant of $150,000 was made to the Ballarat Cancer Research Centre to support a two year trial that will study an individual’s sensitivity and resistance to chemotherapy protocols for lung and mesothelioma cancer patients. The trial will determine which chemotherapy treatments best suit an individual cancer thus improving quality of life and longevity for cancer patients.

 

2007

In July 2007, the Slater & Gordon Asbestos Research Fund made a grant of $60,000 to the Wesley Research Institute in Brisbane to aid research into asbestos related diseases. The money will be used to analyse a cohort of patients with asbestos-related diseases, both benign and malignant.

In March 2007, the Slater & Gordon Asbestos Research Fund made a grant of $37,700 to St Vincent's Private Hospital, Melbourne. The money will be used to conduct a project that will assist in understanding the genetics of lung cancer. As a result of understanding the genetics of lung cancer "novel" treatments can be developed to aid in the care of patients such as occurred with the development of the drug Herceptin for breast cancer patients.

Also in March 2007, the Slater & Gordon Asbestos Research Fund made a further grant of $34,230 to St Vincent's Private Hospital, Melbourne. This money will be used to fund a project that will develop the hospitals existing lung cancer database so that it meets DHR requirements and is useable to the other lung cancer multi-disciplinary cancer clinics in Victoria that have a need to meet the same requirements. The availability of this data will assist in generating research ideas from the treatment of cancer.

2006

In October 2006, the Slater & Gordon Asbestos Research Fund made a grant of $15,000 to the Perth Mesothelioma Group to enable them to invite Dr Sam Armato from Chicago to be a guest speaker at the Third Perth Mesothelioma Centre Symposium 2006. Dr Armato is an Associate Professor of Radiology and the Committee on Medical Physics at the University of Chicago. He is an expert in the CT scanning of mesothelioma.

In September 2006 the Slater & Gordon Asbestos Research Fund made a grant of $57,605 to Austin Health to enable them to synthesise and formulate a drug known as Haematoporphyrin derivative (HPD) for use in the treatment of patients with mesotheliomna.

In June 2006, the Slater & Gordon Asbestos Research Fund made a grant of $1,000 to the Australian Society of Cytology. The grant covered sponsorship of the session entitled "An update on the diagnosis and management of mesothelioma".

 

2005

 

In September 2005, the Slater & Gordon Asbestos Research Fund supported Gippsland Rotary Centenary House with a grant of $25,000 to build a community owned accommodation facility for patients attending the Gippsland Cancer Care Centre at the Latrobe Regional Hospital.


2004

In March 2004, The Slater & Gordon Asbestos Research Fund awarded $50,000 to Professor Bill Musk to support continuing fundamental research into the Wittenoom cohort.

    Awarded to Professor Paul Reynolds to conduct a project entitled "Pre clinical evaluation of Conditionally Replicative Adenovirus Ad5/3Delat24 as a therapy for mesothelioma."

    Awarded to Professor Paul Reynolds to conduct a project entitled " Does replicative viral therapy synergize with immunotherapy in mesothelioma?"

    Awarded to Dr Robbert van der Most to conduct a project entitled "Can we improve anti-mesothelioma chemotherapy by immunotherapy: the promise of interleukin-12"

    2005

Awarded to Professor Bruce Robinson to conduct a project entitled "How the body recognises mesothelioma antigens and how to modify them to produce new therapies"

2008

Mr Svien Van Oyen was awarded $4,270 to attend the International Mesothelioma Interest Group Meeting in the Netherlands in September 2008 Ms Alison Reid was awarded $4,231 to attend the International Mesothelioma Interest Group Meeting in the Netherlands in September 2008 Dr Helman Alfonso was awarded $4,200 to attend the International Mesothelioma Interest Group Meeting in the Netherlands in September 2008

2007

Dr Penny Wong was awarded a $3,000 fellowship to attend the TSANZ conference in New Zealand in March 2007.

 

2006

Dr Greg Deleuil was awarded a $4,000 fellowship to attend the Asian Asbestos Conference 2006 in Thailand.

Dr Piers Canty was awarded a $5,300 fellowship to attend the American Thoracic Society International conference in San Diego from May 19 -24, 2006.

 

Dr Su W Hii was awarded a $4,700 fellowship to attend the European Respiratory Society congress in Munich, Germany from September 2-6, 2006.


2005


Ms Natalie Milic, Research Assistant Royal Adelaide Hospital was awarded a $2,120 fellowship to attend the Thoracic Society Annual Conference in Perth where she was able to obtain first hand the latest research information regarding mesothelioma.

The Victorian Asthma Health Educators Assocation (VAHEA) was awarded a $1,600 fellowship to assist with a professional development day that included an update on a new assay for the detection of soluble mesothelin related peptide (SMRP) in serum.

Dr Andrew Kyoong, Advanced Trainee in Respiratory Medicine at Monash Medical Centre, was awarded a $3,500 fellowship to attend the European Respiratory Society (ERS) meeting in Copenhagen. The meeting included core topics and new developments in diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer, fibrotic lung disease and occupational lung disease by experts in their field.


2004

Dr Malcolm Feigan was awarded a $5,000 fellowship to visit the MD Anderson Centre in Houston, Texas to further advance his research into Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT).

 

Dr James McKeon was awarded a $2,540 fellowship to present a paper at the 9th Europe Pacific Medical and Legal Conference. Dr McKeon's paper was entitled "The Medico-Legal Assessment of Asbestos-Related Lung Disease"
