In 2004, Slater & Gordon established the Slater & Gordon Asbestos Research Fund with an initial commitment of $500,000.
In February 2008, a $200,000 donation was received from Meg Bentley on behalf of Tim Lacone who died of mesothelioma. Slater & Gordon at this time committed a further $300,000 to the fund taking the fund total to $1million.
Further donations have been received by various people in memory of loved ones they have lost to asbestos related disease. To date in excess of $500,000 has been
donated to various health professionals and hospitals to advance
the study of asbestos-related disease, including lung cancer.
The Fund operates as a sub fund of the Melbourne Community Foundation.
The Melbourne Community Foundation is a not-for-profit foundation
that acts as a host organisation for funds created for philanthropic
purposes.
For over two decades, Slater & Gordon has acted for victims
of asbestos-related disease. Over that time, we have seen first
hand the loss of human life due to asbestos-related disease.
At Slater & Gordon we see the provision of financial support
for ongoing efforts to understand and tackle asbestos-related
disease as part of our support for the victims of asbestos-related
disease.
We share the goal of finding a cure.
The firm has a proud history of supporting social justice and
philanthropic causes, particularly through pro bono legal work
and the Slater & Gordon Foundation, established in 2001.
